How An In-Depth Psychoeducational Assessment Can Help You Maximize Your Strengths

Although we tend to associate learning disabilities and their treatment with children and teenagers, there are countless adults who may struggle with ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities for decades without being evaluated for the underlying cause.

These challenges can affect your career, relationships, education, and overall well-being by making everyday tasks unnecessarily difficult and undermining your confidence and success.

If this situation sounds familiar and you’re facing challenges in daily life, our comprehensive evaluations can provide valuable insights. We assess your cognitive strengths, executive functioning, emotional patterns, and other key factors to detect or rule out conditions like learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and high-functioning autism spectrum disorder. Gaining a deeper understanding into how your unique mind works with the support of a professional can help you develop effective strategies to navigate social interactions, improve your productivity, and achieve greater well-being.

Reasons to Pursue Psychoeducational Testing

Here are a few of the many reasons you might decide to get tested:

  • Career difficulties
  • Academic challenges
  • Relationship problems
  • Need for educational or workplace accommodations (e.g., specialized tools, extra time on tests)
  • Desire to access specialized job training and vocational support
  • Self-improvement and planning for the future, both personally and professionally

Conditions Evaluated with Psychoeducational Testing

We provide evaluations for the following conditions, among others:

Testing for Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities can include dyslexia (which involves impaired reading ability), dyscalculia (challenges with mathematical thinking), and dysgraphia (difficulty with writing and other, related fine motor skills). As part of testing for these learning disabilities, you can expect to undergo evaluation of your working memory and cognitive ability.

Testing for ADHD

In adults, ADHD can manifest in difficulties with not only focus but also impulse control, organization, executive function, and other skills that can have wide-ranging ripple effects on one’s life in general. To determine whether you have ADHD, we will assess your distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and ability to plan and complete tasks. To do so, testing may involve behavioral assessments, self-report surveys, clinical interviews, and more.

Testing for High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

High-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult to diagnose because many of those who have this condition can experience above average success in some areas (e.g., cognitive or skills-based) and excessive difficulty in other areas, such as in communication and social connection. This is why pursuing a professional evaluation for this condition, especially if it has been overlooked until adulthood, is particularly valuable.

As part of testing for ASD, we assess for sensory processing difficulties, communication issues, social challenges, and inflexible thinking and behavior using structured interviews, evaluations of social/emotional function, and more. An ASD diagnosis facilitates access to effective support measures that can significantly improve quality of life and day-to-day function for those with ASD.

How the Testing Process Works

You can expect your assessment to involve interviews and direct testing for an average of 3 hours. Here’s what else to expect:

  • A detailed intake interview to understand your goals in getting evaluated and your personal, educational, and medical history
  • Standardized tests that evaluate your intellectual processing capacities as well as memory, attention, and other factors
  • Standardized, norm-referenced questionnaires that compare your function to that of your peers
  • Possible academic assessments for reading/writing, math, and other skills
  • Possible screening for anxiety, depression, and related mental health concerns
  • Review of documents (e.g., previous evaluations, report cards, medical reports) to gain further insight into your medical and academic history
  • Roughly two weeks after you have been tested, a feedback session with your evaluator to discuss your possible diagnosis and their recommendations (e.g., workplace accommodations)
  • An in-depth report containing the results of your assessment, which can be helpful for receiving necessary accommodations

Comprehensive Written Reports

Our written evaluations provide a comprehensive understanding of your cognitive and emotional functioning, so you can gain clarity about how conditions like ADHD or autism might be impacting your daily life. These detailed reports help you understand your specific strengths and challenges, so that you can develop personalized strategies for achieving personal growth, healthier relationships, and other important life goals that significantly impact well-being.

In addition, because our evaluations meet or exceed the requirements of institutions like schools and state/national testing bodies, they can help you advocate for specific accommodations as needed. These may include extended time on exams, changes to your work environment, or other specialized support depending on the specific diagnosis you receive.
